Tell Me More

Right, you've decided to stake your claim on the worldwide web and set up your own website; but where to now? Well, it's quite easy really; you need three things: a name, the content itself and somewhere to put it online. The first of these, the name is what we're going to look at now.

A domain name is your unique online address – you can choose any unused domain name and register the right to use it over a renewable period.  Your choice of name is important: it must be unique, syntactically valid, easy to remember, preferably short, and registered across relevant international or local “top-level domains”.  You then register your chosen domain name(s) by using a domain registrar.

Creator can advise you on your choice of domain name(s) and register these for you, but if you feel confident or adventurous, you can buy a domain online yourself with a credit card quite easily - there are many companies offering this service. Domain names are normally inexpensive, especially the local, country-based ones (like .co.uk); international domain names (like .com, .org, etc) cost a bit more.

a few caveats

So, no problem then?

Well, no, almost…  There are a few caveats when choosing a domain registration company:

  1. Are they fairly priced?  Look around, there are good deals available.
  1. Do they tie you in? Many companies do this - naughty!  They offer you what seems like a good deal, only to limit you otherwise or charge you for what should be free later (see next points).  Most people don’t realise this until it’s time to start hosting!
  2. Mail and Web forwarding free? Forwarding allows you to choose where you are going to host your site and email.  Some registration companies charge for this, or worse, don’t allow it at all, and all they really have to do is make a small, one-time-only change on their server - not nice.
  3. Can you manage your domain name?  A good company will offer you a control panel or admin area where you can do things like manage your “DNS” entries, change nameservers, modify domain contact details, opt out of WHOIS and change the “IPS tag”; all for free.

For the UK, we recommend 123-reg2.  We use them and are very happy with their service. If you’re not into domain DIY or are unsure, we’ll do it all for you for a small fee.

Now, with domain in hand, it’s time to find a hosting3 company for your website.
